Understanding Your Child’s Emotions

Behavior is a Window into Their Needs

Ever wondered why your child behaves a certain way? At times, it can be challenging—leaving
you questioning your parenting skills. But here’s the thing: every behavior stems from an
underlying need
, often masked by emotions, communication hurdles, or unmet expectations.

At Intercare Child Wellbeing Centre (ICWC), our team of speech and language therapy,
occupational therapy, and pediatric specialists understand that children often “act out” because
they lack the tools to express what they’re feeling. That’s why we’re excited to announce an
upcoming child-centered workshop on The Zones of Regulation—a practical framework
designed to help children recognize, label, and manage their emotions effectively.

What is The Zones of Regulation?

The Zones of Regulation is an evidence-based approach developed by occupational therapist
Leah Kuypers. It divides emotions and states of alertness into four colored “zones” that make it
easier for children to identify and manage how they feel:

  • Blue Zone – Sad, tired, sick, or bored
  • Green Zone – Calm, focused, and ready to learn
  • Yellow Zone – Frustrated, excited, worried, or silly
  • Red Zone – Angry, terrified, or out of control

By learning to identify which “zone” they’re in, children gain self-awareness, and through
guided strategies, they learn self-regulation skills—key building blocks for emotional
intelligence (EQ)
. Over time, they become more capable of managing impulses,
communicating emotions constructively, and recovering from stress or disappointment with
greater resilience.

Why It Matters for Your Child’s Emotional Development

Developing emotional intelligence doesn’t just reduce tantrums or defiance—it shapes your
child’s long-term social success and mental wellbeing. When children learn to pause, reflect,
and choose responses instead of reacting impulsively, they:

  • Build empathy and stronger relationships with peers and family
  • Improve focus, learning, and problem-solving skills at school
  • Develop confidence in expressing their emotions appropriately
  • Strengthen coping mechanisms for anxiety, frustration, and change

Quick Tips for Parents

  • Be a detective! Look for hidden triggers such as hunger, anger, loneliness, or tiredness—the real driving forces behind many behaviors.
  • Stay proactive. Keep regular snack times to prevent “hangriness” and ensure consistent routines.
  • Practice active listening. Validate your child’s feelings instead of rushing to correct behavior.
  • Connect daily. Even 10 minutes of undistracted connection time can strengthen emotional bonds.
  • Collaborate with teens. Encourage problem-solving discussions to help them build independence and responsibility.
