A Message for Parents
Executive function refers to a set of mental skills that help us manage and regulate our thoughts, actions, and emotions to achieve goals. It’s like the conductor of an orchestra, coordinating various aspects of cognition to navigate daily tasks effectively.
These skills include:
- Planning and Organization: The ability to create a plan of action and carry it out efficiently, whether it’s completing homework assignments or organizing a schedule.
- Time Management: Knowing how to prioritize tasks, estimate how long they will take, and allocate time accordingly.
- Self-Control: Managing impulses and emotions, resisting distractions, and staying focused on tasks at hand.
- Flexibility: Adapting to changes and shifting strategies when faced with obstacles or unexpected situations.
- Working Memory: Holding and manipulating information in mind, such as remembering instructions or following multi-step directions.
Children with strong executive function skills tend to excel academically, socially, and behaviorally. However, these skills develop gradually and may vary from child to child.
