Intercare and CamTech Celebrate a Successful Digital Health Collaboration

Intercare Hospital and CamTech University marked the successful completion of a six-month digital health student project this week, showcasing how academic learning, real hospital challenges and modern technology can come together to create practical improvements for patients and healthcare teams. During the project closure event at Intercare Hospital, the CamTech student team presented the Guarantee of Payment (GOP) Platform they developed together with Intercare’s Digital Health and IT teams, supported by clinical, finance, insurance and operational colleagues across the hospital. The project focused on a very practical challenge: simplifying the process used to prepare and send Guarantee of Payment requests for insured patients. Today, this process requires several manual handovers between surgeons, anaesthetists, surgical coordinators, Finance and Insurance. Information may need to be rewritten, documents transferred between teams and approvals followed up manually. The new GOP Platform brings these steps into one shared digital workflow, allowing information to move more smoothly between the people involved while improving visibility, traceability and consistency. For patients, the ambition is simple: less administrative friction and a clearer, faster insurance approval journey. The system is designed to reduce repeated data entry, support more accurate cost estimates, track the progress of each request and ultimately help Intercare respond more efficiently when patients are waiting for confirmation from their insurer. The project also creates the technical foundation for future direct digital integration with insurers and, over time, further automation of claims and related insurance processes. But the project is also a story about learning and capability development. The three CamTech students entered the placement with complementary backgrounds in software development, data and artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. During the six-month project, they gained hands-on experience working inside a real hospital environment, learning how digital systems must respond not only to technical requirements, but also to clinical workflows, patient needs, finance processes, data protection and information security. The project was deliberately structured as a real-world learning experience and not a classroom exercise. The students worked directly with Intercare teams, mapped existing processes, developed and tested the solution, and progressively refined it based on feedback from the people who will ultimately use it. This reflected the project-based learning model agreed between Intercare and CamTech from the beginning. It also demonstrates the wider value of collaboration across education, healthcare and technology. Intercare provides the real clinical and operational environment; CamTech contributes young technical talent and academic support; and the wider group ecosystem creates opportunities for students to apply their knowledge in meaningful settings. For Intercare, this collaboration supports a broader ambition to become not only a user of digital technology, but also an organisation capable of developing and shaping digital health solutions around the needs of patients and healthcare professionals. The GOP Platform forms part of Intercare’s wider digital health roadmap, which focuses on patient-centred services, interoperability, artificial intelligence, insurance automation and a more open, standards-based digital health architecture. The project also aligns closely with Cambodia’s emerging national digital health direction, which places growing emphasis on interoperability, reducing duplicate data entry, redesigning inefficient paper-based processes and ensuring that digital systems are designed around the needs of users. The completion of the student placement therefore represents more than the end of one internship project. It is an example of how education, healthcare delivery and digital innovation can reinforce each other giving students meaningful professional experience, helping hospital teams solve real operational problems, and ultimately creating better and more responsive services for patients. As the project now moves from student development into operational handover and further technical validation, Intercare and CamTech are already looking at how similar collaborations could support the next generation of digital health projects. One project, three students, many departments and a shared investment in Cambodia’s future digital health workforce.
